Cookies & Tequila, YUM!
After having that savory lunch at Coco & Moss, I headed over to City Market and explored for a bit visiting some local shops, including the famous cookie shop, Byrd’s. This cookie shop has been around since 1924 and is family-owned. They have multiple locations within downtown Savannah. It’s a must-try if you are in the area and are looking for some sweets. If you’re more into candy than cookies, right across from Byrd’s in City Market is the Savannah Candy Kitchen. The minute you walk in, it’s like a candy lover’s dream. Wall to wall you are surrounded by candy, and right in the middle you can watch the workers make fresh pieces of candy. There is also another room filled with childhood favorites and candy you see all the time around Halloween such as Smarties, Tootsie-Rolls, Lollipops, gummy bears, jaw breakers, etc. Although I did not purchase anything on my first visit, I did have to return to snack on some chocolate-covered pretzels. They were delicious.
After walking around the City Market area, I headed down towards River Street. On River Street, you’ll find amazing restaurants and shops all with a beautiful view of the Savannah River. Also on the river, you’ll find The Georgia Queen, an old yet classic steamboat that is available for tours up and down the Savannah River. I’ll write more about that in the next few blog posts. After doing some light shopping, my appetite was ready for more. Dinner time was approaching as was the build-up of my stomach growling. After hearing about this one restaurant from my parents who had come to eat in Savannah while moving my little sister into SCAD, I knew it was a must-try. It was also where I heard about my Dad taking drinks to go, which I had never heard of in Jersey so had to see it
for myself.
Tequila’s Town location I came to love is located on Whitaker Street, they also have another location in Savannah. Tequila’s Town is Savannah’s best Mexican eatery. They have authentic and traditional recipes as well as a world-class selection of tequila and their very own Tequila Blanco label. The menu has plenty of options ranging from nachos, enchiladas, empanadas, and more.
For my dinner selection, I opted for beef empanadas to start and then was craving some queso so I chose the Queso Nachos. Both did not disappoint, the beef empanadas were filled and the moment you bite in, you were met with the tasty beef inside. It had the perfect amount of flavor, was not dry, and left you wanting more. As for the Queso Nachos, I am very particular when it comes to queso. As everyone does queso a little bit differently, I was wary to try the ones at Tequila Town. However, after picking up the first chip, I was not able to put the chips down. The queso was perfect, it was just what I was looking for. It had that salty tang from the chips but also the warm and cheesy feeling when you bit into it. I could have just easily ordered a second plate, it was that good but I knew I needed to make room for dessert at the famous Leopold’s. As for my drink of choice, I had to try the Strawberry Margarita and it was so refreshing. After finishing my drink at dinner, I knew I had to experience the whole to-go drink experience and ordered one more so I could walk around with it. It was just what you needed on a hot night in Savannah before heading over to Leopold’s for some cold ice cream dessert. Stay tuned for more on desserts in Savannah, GA!
