Let's talk about sex, baby…Oh, and desserts too!
Savannah may be known for its historic nature, river views, restaurant, and shops; however, they are the place to be for desserts. One of the more notable desserts I’ve had during my stay in Savannah was at a dessert restaurant called Better Than Sex. It is specifically dessert only so if you are looking to have a great dinner meal, do try one of Savannah’s many dining staples. Better Than Sex features some of the best desserts in an intimate speakeasy atmosphere. They also feature chocolate and caramel-covered wines, beers, and house-made cocktails and they have some level of privacy with a wall or curtain in between most of the tables.
As the name dictates, the desserts also carry that same naughty nature in their names. For example, the names of some of the desserts are Peanut Butter Perversion, Kinky-er Key West Cream Pie, Italian Stallion, Cookie Nookie Pie, Morning After, and Fever. Their signature drinks are named in the same way. I opted for the Fever dessert which consists of warm chocolate cake with chocolate pudding, topped with white vanilla bean balls, and a chocolate stick in the middle with a white swirl drizzle. It was to die for, so much that I devoured it within
five minutes.
Now, Better Than Sex is not the only dessert option in downtown savannah. Another area with booming popularity and a Savannah essential is Leopold’s. Since 1919, Leopold’s homemade super-premium ice cream is a must-try. There are always lines out the door as my younger sister has told me since moving into SCAD, it’s that good. It all started with three brothers from Greece and once they perfected their formula, they headed over to the States. One of the founding brothers, Peter, had a son, Stratton, who wanted to take over the business and learn the ways of perfecting ice cream.
However, his dreams also reached far beyond ice cream all the way to Hollywood. Today, Stratton is an active member of the Hollywood motion picture community, serving as Producer on films such as Mission Impossible 3, the Sum of All Fears, The General’s Daughter, Paycheck, and Parker. Props and posters from these films can be found in the shop today! Leopold’s is still going strong and if you’re ever in the area, you are going to want to make a pit stop.
