Savannah’s Seafood
As someone who lives on the north end of things and is somewhat close to water, I thrive when I find great seafood options. While visiting Savannah, I knew that along River Street and even downtown, there would be an abundance, just what I needed.
One of the first places I wanted to try as y parents highly recommended it, was Belford’s Seafood and Steaks. Located right in City Market amongst so many shops, bars, and other restaurants, they have the perfect location.
Belford’s is recognized as having some of the finest steaks and seafood. Therefore, it was a must-stop on my list of places to try. While I was dining there, I ordered the Seared Sea Scallops. It came with three scallops, saffron risotto, broccolini, and scampi sauce. Let me tell you now, it was delicious! I wish I could have ordered more, but that did not fit my budget. The scallops were perfectly cooked and they ask you how you prefer to have them cooked as they ask with steaks. The service was excellent and I accompanied my dish with a glass of French Blue Bordeaux. Although I was left wanting more, there was definitely no room for dessert, the meal was just perfect and filling.
Now, after having such a great first try of Savannah’s seafood, I knew I could trust ordering seafood elsewhere. That led me to my next dining option, The Shrimp Factory. Located right on River Street, this restaurant has front-row views of the Savannah River and has a pirate/boat-like theme once inside. It is very family-friendly and the staff is very warm and welcoming. A little cool-known fact about this restaurant is that it is considered to be haunted! Since 1977, the restaurant staff has always felt a presence upstairs in their storage facilities. Many recount different experiences with this ghost dubbed “Joe”, but they are always sure to leave rum upstairs for him, as bottles tend to fall off their shelves when they run low. Don’t worry, as “Joe” never makes appearances downstairs.
As I mentioned before, I am a lover of all seafood, so I knew I needed to try more than just scallops while I was visiting. I ordered a shrimp cocktail to start as an appetizer as one would have to order shrimp at a restaurant called The Shrimp Factory, it would just be weird to not do so. The shrimp was great, it was covered in what I believe is Old Bay seasoning and it came with house-made cocktail sauce. For my dinner meal, I ordered the Low Country Crab Cakes. These are two native blue crab cakes lightly breaded and then broiled. It comes served with southern yellow rice and garlic-buttered broccoli. These crab cakes were big and very filling, but oh so good. They came with a pink sauce to dip in and it was a perfect match. The yellow rice reminded me strangely of home Spanish rice. I’m not sure what it was seasoned with but I would almost have to say that the rice was just as good as the crab cakes. I devoured both but the rice was very addicting. I wish I had more time in Savannah as there were so many other restaurants that I wanted to try and so many seafood options. Until next time, stay tuned for updates on my travel experiences :)
